The Judicial Investigation Agency (Organismo de Investigación Judicial) (OIJ), is a unit of the Supreme Court of Costa Rica, currently directed by Jorge Rojas.
It was created in 1973 as a subsidiary body of the Criminal Courts of Public Prosecutions in the discovery and scientific verification of the alleged crimes and their perpetrators.
Its legal framework stipulates that it can act on its own initiative, by denunciation or by order of competent authority in investigating crimes of public action and in the identification and apprehension of alleged offenders. It also aims to collect, secure and manage scientific evidence and other background research.
